Join the Master Gardeners of Davidson County (MGofDC) for a hands-on Boxwood Pruning Demonstration Workshop at the Historic Nashville City Cemetery, in partnership with the Nashville City Cemetery Association.
Boxwoods have long been a defining feature of historic Southern landscapes, including cemetery gardens and estate grounds dating back to the 19th century. Proper pruning preserves their natural form, supports plant health, and helps maintain the character of these historic spaces for future generations.
During this outdoor demonstration, participants will learn:
When and how to prune boxwoods correctly
Techniques that promote long-term plant health and structure
Common mistakes that lead to disease and decline
How thoughtful pruning supports the preservation of historic landscapes
This is a hands-on working session, and participants will be actively pruning boxwoods within the cemetery grounds while learning best practices from trained Extension Master Gardeners.
This workshop is open to the public.
Please bring:
Hand pruning shears, hedge shears
Gardening gloves
Appropriate clothing for outdoor work and weather conditions
By caring for these historic boxwoods, participants will contribute directly to the stewardship of one of Nashville’s most significant historic landscapes while gaining practical skills to use in their own gardens.
Logistics & Parking: Please park at the outlying maintenance shed to ensure visitors to the Keeble Building have accessible parking.
MGofDC Certifier Members and Interns, please bring additional tools (loppers) as available for your Work Hours after the demonstration.
